Welcome to Smart Load Management

Smart Load Management is Innovative Technology South Africa’s cutting-edge proprietary software solution designed and developed to eradicate South Africa’s unique load shedding problem.

Load shedding is the process of rotating planned power outages at the MV level throughout municipalities until the demand decreases and more capacity becomes available. This is aimed at reducing the strain of consumption placed on South Africa’s aged and weakened electricity grid.

Load shedding was introduced as a temporary measure to reduce electricity consumption in the country while a more appropriate and permanent solution was finalised. However, a decade and some change later we are still experiencing load shedding, with most of the country being without power multiple times a day or for hours at a time. It is known that the effects of load shedding have been detrimental to our country and our economy, with foreign investors opting out of doing business with South African businesses and government. Students study by candlelight and criminals thrive in the darkness that comes with night time load shedding.

A uniquely South African problem deserves a uniquely South African solution. Innovative Technology South Africa (ITSA) has developed the Smart Load Management (SLM) solution.

SLM has proven to reduce overall consumption while keeping the lights on. SLM is the process of managing and controlling the flow of electricity through the grid. Through SLM we are able to modify the load to ensure Eskom requirements for load shedding are met while still providing electricity.

This means:

  • No more all-out darkness
  • Consumers always have lights
  • Key buildings and infrastructure have continuous supply
  • Infrastructure damage from load shedding is eliminated
  • Transformer and substation damage is eliminated

By controlling the load at consumer level through Smart Metering devices, consumers are able to still consume electricity in small amounts (lights, chargers, TV), while large-consumption appliances such as air conditioning and kettles are not usable in Load Managed periods.

SLM is scalable and customisable to cater for specific requirements, with load reduction periods and configurations being suited to the client requirements.
